#KnowYourPoshan: Are we going back to basics?

3 min read

If you are a typical Indian kid, you will recall having an argument with your mother at some point in your life about those greens that you didn’t want to eat. You will remember yourself whining for that slice of pizza instead of having home-cooked food. Well, you are not alone!

Now as a young adult, someone who is trying to live their life independently, or as someone who wants to stay fit and feel good about themselves, now we realize how important those conversations with our mothers were. We now realize the value of home-cooked meals, of the secrets that our Indian diet and lifestyle have and how we are now going #BackToBasics.

What makes our old school Indian food so wholesome?

We often don’t realize how nutritious our regular Indian diet can be. Think of a typical lunch at home. What are you having? A bowl of dal, two rotis, a bowl of rice, mixed vegetables and some onions, cucumber, and tomatoes on the side? Congratulations, you’re having a good balanced diet!

Lentils or dals are a super good source of protein, veggies form the bedrock of the diet and rice and roti add to the required carb and fat intake. Oh and the ghee you pour over: having it in moderation is healthy too! This kind of diet is going to keep you pumped up and full for longer than any junk food can.

“Healthy food is not tasty, ya!”

If you are a typical Indian kid, you will recall having an argument with your mother at some point in your life about those greens that you didn’t want to eat. You will remember yourself whining for that slice of pizza instead of having home-cooked food. Well, you are not alone!

One of the main hesitation that people have in switching to a healthy lifestyle is that they feel healthy food will not be tasty enough. We Indians know it in our heart that there is no cuisine in the world as delicious as ours.

Bonus point: Indian basic diet is not expensive either. Compared to all those fancy products like quinoa, avocadoes, etc, their Indian desi alternatives are going to cost you much less.

How can you go #BackToBasics?

Here are a bunch of things you can swap to get the best of our Indian alternative:

  • Replace quinoa for lentils (dal)
  • Replace protein shakes for eggs
  • Replace avocados for banana
  • Replace peanut butter for chickpeas

So, there are no excuses for good health, especially when we can go #BackToBasics and make healthier choices in life!

We The Young has joined forces with Instagram and Facebook India to help young India get closer to their nutritional goals. The Government’s initiative, Poshan Abhiyan talks exactly of this and together we hope to create a meaningful conversation around it.
